National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches

During the Swim for Life Campaign in 1997, RLSS UK worked successfully for the inclusion of swimming and water safety in the National Curriculum for England and Wales at Key Stage Two and promoted the importance of water-rescue training for swimming teachers and coaches and outdoor centre staff.

The OFSTED evaluation of swimming in Key Stage 2, November 2000 indentified that generally teachers had a good understanding of the subject, and lessons were delivered in a good interesting way. Teachers were aware of health and safety implications. However, there were still instances of unsatisfactory teaching methods.

The core skills in the NRASTC ensure that it is appropriate for the safe supervision of activities in a wide range of pools, irrespective of their size, shape or depth.
